SUMMARY:Eastern Bays Speed Review and Pedestrian Crossings
DESCRIPTION:As part of the consent conditions under the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays shared path project(External link)\, Hutt City Council is required to undertake a speed and safety review on Marine Drive. \nFurther to this the Government’s road safety strategy\, ‘Road to Zero – Te Ara Ki Ti Ora’(External link)\, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads to Zero\, also requires all councils to conduct a speed review programme. The Eastern Bays has been identified as a priority for speed management due to safety concerns. \nThe review has been completed and Hutt City Council is now consulting with the community on the proposed changes\, which include a speed limit reduction from 70km/h to 50km/h between Whiorau Lowry Bay and Sunshine Bay as well as the installation of three new raised pedestrian crossings near bus shelters along Marine Drive. \nhttps://haveyoursay.huttcity.govt.nz/ebspeedreview to complete the survey or email your views to haveyoursay@huttcity.govt.nz . \nIN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS RAISED:\n– All Councils are required to complete speed reviews under the road safety strategy: ‘Road to Zero – Te Ara Ki Ti Ora’\, which aims to improve road safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads to Zero.\n– The Eastern Bays has been identified as a priority for speed management due to safety concerns. The speed review is also a consenting condition of the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays shared path.\n– Marine Drive is unsafe – a high number of speed-related crashes (with injuries) have occurred on the road\, and there have been public complaints about safety and driving speeds. There have been 42 recorded crashes in the five years between 2016-2020\, 20 of which resulted in injuries.\n– Significant data analysis\, engineering expertise and transport planning work has gone into the proposed solution.\n– Travel-duration data shows that travel times along Marine Drive will not be significantly increased by this speed limit reduction. Waka Kotahi’s Megamaps speed data showed that the current operating travel time along the 5.3km stretch of Marine Drive is about 6mins 20secs\, the estimated new operating travel time with the proposed 50km/h speed limit is 6mins 30secs\n– The pedestrian crossings will improve safety for pedestrians crossing at major bus stops. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGo here to find out more\, view the map and complete the survey
