SUMMARY:Waste collection: Red (general) & Yellow (paper/plastics/cans)
DESCRIPTION:Non recyclable rubbish\nYour rubbish bin / ipupara \nThis is your wheelie bin with the red lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nWhen green waste goes to landfill it creates methane\, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.\nInstead of putting it in your red bin\, consider composting or using our green waste collection.\nDid you know? I get collected weekly. \n  \n  \nPaper & plastics\nYour recycling bin with the yellow lid / ipu hangarua \nThis is your wheelie bin with the yellow lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nI get collected on yellow weeks. When incorrect items end up in the wrong bin\, they contaminate the recycling / ipu hangarua\, which can mean the whole truckload ends up going to landfill. That’s why we need to make sure the only thing that goes in our yellow bins is the stuff that’s too good to waste. \n  \nWhat can be put in the Yellow bin? \nYES \n\nPaper and cardboard\nTins and cans\nPlastic containers marked with these symbols\, often embossed on bottom of item\nPlastic symbols 1\,2\,5\n\nNO \n\nGlass\nBatteries\nNappies\nDrink cartons / Tetrapak\nPolystyrene\, clothes hangers and toys\nSoft plastics\, cling film and strapping\n\nNote: Many of these non recyclable materials can be recycled through other channels – some options are listed here.

SUMMARY:The future of food and energy - Mike Joy
DESCRIPTION:3pm Sunday 13 August\, St Ronan’s church\, Eastbourne – Koha greatly appreciated.\nAs an ecologist Mike sees the world in an interconnected systems way. This view allows for the awareness and acceptance that civilisation is facing peak everything\, and climate change is but one of a raft of existential crises that are symptoms overshoot. The crises are the manifestation of hitting planetary boundaries\, or biophysical limits to growth we were warned about in the 1970s. The burgeoning human population and levels of consumption has far exceeded the ability of the planet to sustain it long-term through. This overshoot was enabled using fossil energy\, in the case of food much of it through synthetic nitrogen\, which allowed us\, albeit temporarily to eat the past. This transition was arrogantly labelled the ‘green revolution’ and talked up as a great human achievement but\, it was one-off subsidy from the past. This legacy is\, however\, close to its end as the ‘easy energy pickings’ diminish.\nTo be able to feed the burgeoning population without fossil fuels and keep greenhouse gas emissions at a safe level will require a drastic reduction in consumption. Thus\, degrowth is inescapable our choice is whether we do it in a managed way or have it forced upon us. \n Mike Joy BSc\, MSc (1st class hons)\, PhD in Ecology is a Senior researcher at the Institute for Governance and Policy Studies at Victoria University\, Wellington.  He researches ecological modelling\, bioassessment\, environmental science\, environmental policy\, and energy futures. \nMike has published many papers in scientific journals\, many international as well as articles and op-eds for newspapers and magazines. He has authored many reports for Regional Councils and ministry for the environment and has developed several bioassessment tools and associated software. \nMike is an outspoken advocate for environmental protection in New Zealand and has received a number of awards including an Ecology in Action award from the NZ ecological Society\, an Old Blue award from Forest and Bird\, he received the Tertiary Education Union NZ Award of Excellence for Academic Freedom and contribution to Public Education\, the 2013 Charles Fleming Award for environmental work from the Royal Society of New Zealand\, in 2015 the Morgan Foundation inaugural River Voice Award and in 2017 the inaugural NZ Universities Critic and Conscience award.

This is especially pertinent in terms of the climate crisis that we are facing. \nIntending to come along? So that we have some idea of numbers attending\, please RSVP by email. Partners\, family members and friends who have helped MIRO are most welcome. \n  \nAGENDA: MIRO 2023 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING \n1.     Apologies \n2.     Minutes of the 2022 AGM \n3.     Chair’s Report \n4.     Treasurer’s Report \n5.     Election of Committee \n6.     General Business \nThe 2023 Annual Report is available here: MIRO 2023 Annual Report. SUMMARY:Roto Parangarahu Community Planting Day
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are two nationally significant and breath-taking lakes hidden in East Harbour Regional Park?\n\n\nThese lakes are particularly important to the surrounding environment and are home to native taonga. This includes a range of wetland plants\, īnanga (galaxias maculatus)\, manu (birds)\, and our native freshwater mussel\, the kākahi. \nJoin us for a day of planting mingimingi\, ake ake\, and other native species along the top of Cameron Ridge with spectacular views over Roto Kohangatera and the South Island. With Pencarrow Lighthouse and Roto Parangarahu nearby\, you’ll enjoy a day planting and exploring this beautiful area of the park. \nThis planting day is suitable for people with a medium level of fitness as you will need to carry plants and dig holes. The area being planted is a short 20-minute walk from the bus up to the planting area. This is not suitable for children and recommended for 13 years and above. There will be a toilet provided during the planting. No dogs are allowed in this park. SUMMARY:Matariki Puanga 2023
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Mana Whenua have gifted ‘Matariki Puanga’ as the name for current and future years. This year’s activities and events will take place between 3 – 20 July. \nLike last year\, we will have a one-day community wide celebration as part of this programme. Through feedback\, hui and wānanga between community\, stakeholders\, and council\, we have looked to truly take this celebration into the community. Our approach is to hold this in different parts of the city each year\, with this year’s being held on the 9th of July in Naenae.  In addition\, as part of the programme\, there will be activities at all of our hubs throughout the month of July. \nThis year’s approach and full programme is endorsed by Mana Whenua.

SUMMARY:At the Bay - by Katherine Mansfield
DESCRIPTION:Wellesley College at Days Bay is the perfect setting for the first screening of this production. It is one of the few buildings that survive from 1908\, when Mansfield stayed at her parents’ cottage at nearby Downes Point. Known then as Days Bay House\, a hotel\, the impressive facade of the main building is much the same today. The feature is a new production by local film maker Simon Hoyle (Southlight) and includes actors from Eastbourne’s Butterfly Creek Theatre Group. Directed by Anne Manchester\, it also draws on many contemporary images of the setting for “At the Bay”\, chosen by historian Alison Carew. \nMansfield scholar and musician\, Martin Griffiths (cello)\, together with pianist Sherry Grant\, will perform pieces by Edwin Carr\, Arnold Trowell and one of Mansfield’s favourite composers\, Chopin. \nRedmer Yska\, the author of the acclaimed book about Mansfield’s early childhood\, A Strange Beautiful Excitement\, will talk about his new book about Mansfield’s years in Europe. \nA discussion of the project and a profile of one of the actors\, Sir Ashley Bloomfield\, can be\nfound at: https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/131918675/sir-ashley-bloomfield-back-in-front-of-the-camera-with-new-acting-gig \n Sunday 2 July 2023\n 7.00 pm – 8.30 pm\n Auditorium\, Wellesley College\, Days Bay\, Lower Hutt 5013 \n$16.20  Tickets for At The Bay – Wellington – Eventfinda
