SUMMARY:RSA Poppy Day
DESCRIPTION:Poppy Day is the RNZRSA’s main fundraising activity. Donations collected on Poppy Day help us improve the health and wellbeing outcomes for New Zealand’s veterans of all ages. \n\nYou can donate to the RSA at anytime: Click here to donate online. \nThe RSA was established in 1916 with the aim of taking care of New Zealand’s veterans and their families as soldiers returned from Gallipoli. While today’s soldiers face different challenges\, our support to them and their whanau continues. \nIn 2024 we celebrated 102 years of the Poppy Appeal – with the Poppy campaign running throughout the month of April and Poppy Day\, our street collection\, occurring on 19 April. \nThe first poppy appeal in 1922 netted 13\,166 pounds – poppies were sold for one shilling each. Today’s poppies are sold for a gold coin donation and we average close to a million poppies sold each year.

SUMMARY:ANZAC Day
DESCRIPTION:EMRSA_ANZAC Day Service Sheet 2026 \nAnzac Day is usually commemorated by the Eastbourne Community at the war memorial adjacent to Muritai School\, followed by refreshments at the Eastbourne Sports and Services Club. \nAssembly at Ballinger Gardens\, Makaro Street from 9.30am – March to the Memorial Gates\, Muritai School. ANZAC Service commences at 10am. \nAnzac Day is observed on 25 April. It commemorates New Zealanders killed in war and honours returned and serving servicemen and women. \nAnzac Day dates\n1916 – Anzac Day gazetted as a half-day holiday \n1921 – Anzac Day becomes a full public holiday \n1939 – Dawn ceremony widely included in New Zealand Anzac Day commemorations for the first time \n1949 – Legislation passed preventing Anzac Day from being ‘Mondayised’ \n1966 – Current Anzac Day Act liberalises activities allowed after 1 p.m. on Anzac Day \n2013 – When 25 April falls on a Saturday or Sunday\, the Monday will now be a public holiday \n2020 – All Anzac Day public ceremonies in New Zealand cancelled because of COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic \nThe date marks the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles and open a sea route to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign\, Gallipoli was still held by its Ottoman Turkish defenders. \nThousands lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign: 87\,000 Ottoman Turks\, 44\,000 men from France and the British Empire\, including 8500 Australians. To this day\, Australia also marks the events of 25 April. Among the dead were 2779 New Zealanders\, about one in six of those who served on Gallipoli. \nThey may have ended in military defeat\, but for many New Zealanders then and since\, the Gallipoli landings signalled that New Zealand was becoming a distinct nation\, even as it fought on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire. \nAnzac Day was first observed in 1916. The day has gone through many changes since. The ceremonies that are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand\, and in places overseas where New Zealanders gather\, are modelled on a military funeral and remain rich in tradition and ritual. \n(https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/anzac-day/introduction)

SUMMARY:PICTURE PERFECT - Historical Society of Eastbourne: 7-17 May
DESCRIPTION:The eastern bays\, through the eyes of local artists\nIt all started with a phone call\, and an unexpected invitation: would the Historical Society be interested in mounting an exhibition in the Hutt Art Society’s galleries? Even better\, an anonymous benefactor would pay the gallery fees. Of course we said yes! So\, after months of preparation\, we’ll be presenting Picture Perfect: A century of paintings and photographs of the Eastern Bays at the Hutt Art Centre in Myrtle Street\, Lower Hutt\, from 7 th to 17 th May. \nThe timing of the invitation was excellent. Two years earlier we’d embarked on a major project: to create a detailed inventory of the artworks in our archive Collection\, to get them restored if needed\, and to research the artists\, some of whom we knew very little about.\nThe inventory and research were carried out by Claire Taggart\, one of our dedicated volunteers. Her work meant we could start thinking about sharing these unique paintings and drawings\, most of them never exhibited before\, with the wider community. And because we had nowhere to display them permanently\, an exhibition seemed the way to go.\nSo where did these artworks come from? Like nearly everything in our Collection\, they’d had been donated to the Historical Society over many years. Some were inherited from the Eastbourne Borough Council in 1989; others were gifted by the artists or their families\, or by local residents moving house or sorting an estate. A few were bequests. Several more artworks have been donated in the past year\, and a few others are being loaned for the exhibition. Nearly all are by local artists\, some of them\nwell-known names in Wellington art circles\, such as Albert Hansen-Knarhoj\, Elisabet Delbrück\, Rena Swift and Alan Collins. Other names are less familiar\, for example Arthur Percival Potter\, Simon Prins and Catherine Clunies-Ross. \nThe collection ranges from small watercolours and pencil drawings to large oil paintings. Among them are two striking portraits: one of Miss Aileen Stace (1895-1977)\, a well-known Eastbourne resident\, and the other of a colourful local character whose identity is currently under wraps. \nThe artworks actually span more than the ‘century’ of the title: the earliest is dated 1911\, while the most recent was completed just last year. The timespan allows us to notice gradual changes\, such as the regenerating bush and Eastbourne’s shifting shoreline. Recurring subjects include the harbour in all its moods\, Lion Rock (clearly a popular landmark!)\, and the old ferries\, especially the much-loved Cobar (1906-1948). Yet the visitor is also in for some surprises. A railway at Pencarrow Head in the early 1900s – who knew?\nIn the smaller of the two galleries\, the visitor enters the black-and-white (and occasionally hand-coloured) world of early 20 th century photography. Most of the photographs came to us from the Borough Council and are being exhibited here for the first time. They include large\, remarkably clear panoramas in their original frames\, which makes them rare historical objects in their own right. \nAlso part of the Council’s legacy is a collection of framed photographs depicting aspects of life ‘at the bay’ from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some of these images may be more familiar\, but together they provide a fascinating study of a young and growing community.\nThere’ll be surprises here too – even for us. A member of the Hutt Art Society found some ‘mystery’ glass-plate negatives of the eastern bays in a car boot sale\, and these are currently being developed and printed. All will be revealed at the exhibition…. \nWe look forward to seeing you there in May – and please tell your friends!\nAli Carew

SUMMARY:National Emergency Mobile Alert test
DESCRIPTION:National Emergency Mobile Alert test – save the date\n\n\n\n\nThe nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system is taking place in the evening of Sunday 25 May between 6-7pm. This is a routine test to make sure the system is working well\, and we anticipate that over 5.5 million phones will receive this message. \nAnybody who may be distressed by the alert\, or those have a hidden second phone for their safety\, should put their phones in flight mode or turn them off between the hours of 6-7pm on Sunday 25 May to avoid the sound of the alert. Switching to silent mode on most mobile phone models will not stop the alert from sounding. \nPlease feel free to share the date and time of the alert. Further messages to key stakeholders will be shared at a later date\, and a nationwide ad campaign will run closer to the time to ensure the general public is aware of when the alert will take place. \nIn the event of a Tsunami Alert do you know where to go? Try this Tsunami Ready app to find out \nYou can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system\, including a factsheet and list of FAQs by clicking the button below. \n\n\n\nAll about the Emergency Mobile Alert system

SUMMARY:Eastbourne & The Bays Youth Forum
DESCRIPTION:Are you 11 – 19 years old? \nHave you got ideas about what this will look like? \nWhen? \n\nMonday 28 July\nEastbourne Library\n5:30 – 7pm\nFood provided.\n\nThis will be an info evening to explore establishing our own Youth Forum in Eastbourne and the Bays. \n\nThe Eastbourne Youth Forum is a youth-led initiative for young people to have a voice\, lead solutions\, and connect with our community. This concept aims to foster a more cohesive and connected Eastbourne community. \nIt will be a youth-led space\, supported by the ECB\, where young people can: \n\nVoice their needs and interests\nEngage with the community and Foster Community Connection\nFill gaps\nBridge generational gaps\nEnhance Mental Health and Resilience\nEmpower Youth Leadership\n\nWe want our local youth to feel valued in Eastbourne and to have a voice. Rather than creating programmes for them\, we want to give them space to identify gaps\, collaborate with the community\, and lead solutions. This forum will bridge generational gaps\, dispel myths about “non-youth” spaces (e.g.\, ECB meetings\, Lions Club)\, and build a more cohesive community. \nFeel free to get in touch with Emily or Kaye. \n0211885106 \nemilykeddell@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Community Board Election nominations close (noon)
DESCRIPTION:Please consider standing for the board\, we fought to keep it\, now let’s use it to support our community. It’s as much work (or as little) as you want to make it\, and our primary responsibility is to represent the community to council. We pass on information to the community\, get feedback\, and relay that back to HCC as appropriate. We need 5 candidates to complete the board\, 6 or more to have an election. Ideally we want broad representation across the whole community – Eastbourne and the Bays. \nYou don’t have to do any electioneering if you don’t want to. Some current board members are standing again so you won’t be alone. \nIf anyone would like to discuss this with any current board member\, or need help\, we’d be happy to do so – please don’t leave it too late! \n\nNominations close midday Friday 1 August (1 week away).\nYou need 2 electors / nominators to sign.\nYou need to provide the nomination form completed\, evidence of NZ citizenship\, evidence of your deposit\, a photo *\, and a profile statement* (all can be hand delivered or emailed). (* optional)\nA deposit of $200 is required which is refunded if the you get at least 25% (1/4) of the votes of the lowest polling successful candidate (i.e most get it refunded).\n\nDetails and forms here: https://www.huttcity.govt.nz/council/elections/2025-local-government-elections

SUMMARY:Professional deer cullers in East Harbour Regional Park (11 Aug - 19 Sept)
DESCRIPTION:Greater Wellington Regional Council have contracted professional deer cullers who will be hunting in East Harbour Regional Park Northern Forest between 11th August & 19th September. Hunters will be only hunting when weather conditions are conducive to hunting. There will be 13 days of actual hunting in the period. No hunting will be undertaken on weekends\, public holidays or school holidays. Hunting will on occasion be occurring at night. The EHRP website will be updated daily as the hunter communicate their plans to me. Please feel free to text me at 021771730 if you are unsure.\n\nPlease report deer sightings – include date of sighting\, species\, number\, specific location\, activity and photos are always useful – contact me at 021771730\, (text is good) or zane.gillgren@gw.govt.nz\n\nThere is also an opportunity to undertake culling on private property. Written permission is required for the hunter to cross onto private land. This year’s contract allows private hunting under the GWRC contract on a cost recovery basis. Cost will be $70 per hour of hunting time with a minimum of 3 hours. There is no guarantee of shooting an animal. Contact Zane Gillgren at 021771730\, or zane.gillgren@gw.govt.nz – to discuss culling on private land.\n\nProfessional hunters with knowledge of the area and the skills required to operate in the sensitive environment are being employed by GWRC to hunt deer prone areas of the Northern Forest block for wild deer and signs of their presence.\nMembers of the public using the area will be advised to stay on the main sign-posted walking tracks and to keep dogs on leads. Warning signs erected at all park entrances will be used to notify the users of the area.\nThe culling is necessary to minimise the impact of deer on the ecological values of the forest\, which has been identified as an area of high biodiversity value by GWRC’s Biodiversity department. Heavy browsing of favoured plant species by deer can eliminate individual native species from an area resulting in the loss of diversity and functionality of the forest ecosystem. Reducing wild deer numbers will assist GWRC in their efforts towards restoring the native ecosystem functions of the Northern Forest.
