His current research focuses on the description of the New Zealand flora and the conservation of rare and threatened plants. Past projects have included the pollination biology of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids\, and the genetic affinities between NZ alpine buttercups and those from South America.  This talk will present an overview of the of the work Carlos is doing\, in collaboration with other scientist across New Zealand\, to describe our native orchid flora and secure the long term survival of a number of orchid species now on the brink of extinction. DESCRIPTION:As part of the consent conditions under the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays shared path project(External link)\, Hutt City Council is required to undertake a speed and safety review on Marine Drive. \nFurther to this the Government’s road safety strategy\, ‘Road to Zero – Te Ara Ki Ti Ora’(External link)\, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads to Zero\, also requires all councils to conduct a speed review programme. The Eastern Bays has been identified as a priority for speed management due to safety concerns. \nThe review has been completed and Hutt City Council is now consulting with the community on the proposed changes\, which include a speed limit reduction from 70km/h to 50km/h between Whiorau Lowry Bay and Sunshine Bay as well as the installation of three new raised pedestrian crossings near bus shelters along Marine Drive. \nhttps://haveyoursay.huttcity.govt.nz/ebspeedreview to complete the survey or email your views to haveyoursay@huttcity.govt.nz . \nIN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS RAISED:\n– All Councils are required to complete speed reviews under the road safety strategy: ‘Road to Zero – Te Ara Ki Ti Ora’\, which aims to improve road safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads to Zero.\n– The Eastern Bays has been identified as a priority for speed management due to safety concerns. The speed review is also a consenting condition of the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays shared path.\n– Marine Drive is unsafe – a high number of speed-related crashes (with injuries) have occurred on the road\, and there have been public complaints about safety and driving speeds. There have been 42 recorded crashes in the five years between 2016-2020\, 20 of which resulted in injuries.\n– Significant data analysis\, engineering expertise and transport planning work has gone into the proposed solution.\n– Travel-duration data shows that travel times along Marine Drive will not be significantly increased by this speed limit reduction. Waka Kotahi’s Megamaps speed data showed that the current operating travel time along the 5.3km stretch of Marine Drive is about 6mins 20secs\, the estimated new operating travel time with the proposed 50km/h speed limit is 6mins 30secs\n– The pedestrian crossings will improve safety for pedestrians crossing at major bus stops. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGo here to find out more\, view the map and complete the survey

SUMMARY:Southern Remutaka Aerial Pest Control Operation
DESCRIPTION:Update – dates changed! 16th of May to the 10th of June. \nSouthern Remutaka: Proposed Aerial 1080 Programme – Operation Notification EcoFX has been contracted by OSPRI New Zealand to undertake a large-scale aerial 1080 operation in the Southern Remutaka Ranges. The purpose of the operation is to reduce the possum population to low numbers to prevent the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB). The operation is scheduled to be delivered in May 2022\, but may occur as late as June as the programme is weather-dependent. There are two phases to the proposed programme. Non-toxic prefeed cereal baits will be sown over the treatment blocks at an average rate of 1.0 kg per ha. Approximately 7 days later toxic 1080 baits will be sown over the treatment area at an average rate of 2 kg/ha. Both phases are weather dependant requiring 2-3 fine nights with minimal rainfall after application. EcoFX is obtaining required consents from the relevant agencies to carry out the work. As part of public notification\, EcoFX will be placing advertisements in local and regional papers circulating in the wider area to inform the public of the operation and the associated risks. In addition\, EcoFX will be erecting signage at all key public access points such as walking and cycle tracks\, roadways and public amenity areas. A reminder to please check for signage if you are in the area. And; \n\nDO NOT TOUCH poison bait\nWATCH CHILDREN at all times\nDO NOT EAT animals from the area (this also applies to buffer zones around the treatment area)\nPoison bait or carcasses are DEADLY to DOGS\nObserve these rules whenever you see warning signs about pesticides.\n\nThe presence of warning signs indicates that pesticide residues may be present in baits or animals. When signs are removed\, this means you can resume normal activities in the area. Please report suspected vandalism or unauthorised removal of signs. DESCRIPTION:HCC are reviewing the Māori Land Rates Remissions Policy following the 2021 Local Government (Rating of Whenua Māori) Amendment Act.\n\nThey propose broadening the scope of the policy\, which furthers Council’s commitment to supporting whānau and regional development through whenua (land). This includes considering applications for remission of rates on general land collectively owned by Māori in the circumstances set out in the policy. \nThis aligns with Greater Wellington Regional Council’s policy\, a decision we made following consultation with Mana Whenua and kaitiaki of Māori freehold land and to ensure regional consistency. \nWhile this policy particularly affects Māori freehold land owners in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt\, everyone may have an interest\, and is welcome to provide a submission on the proposed changes to the policy.\n\nView changes that must be made under the new legislation with  the old and new policies https://www.huttcity.govt.nz/council/consultations#remissionspolicy \nIf you have any feedback\, you can submit it at haveyoursay@huttcity.govt.nz by 5pm Monday 30 May 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Anzac Day 2022\nThe Eastbourne Memorial RSA reluctantly noted in last month’s Eastbourne Herald that it has had to cancel this year’s Street March and Citizens Commemorative Service.\nEarlier in March the RNZRSA informed all RSAs that no NZDF resources would be available for Anzac Day 2022. Also the Hutt City Council advised it was likely that there would not be a public service on Anzac Day\, instead it would be replaced by a private service in the St James Church for approximately 75 guests and that this service would be ‘live streamed’ to the public\, – and they would advise that there would be no dawn parade or service to attend.\nConsequently the EMRSA withdrew all it’s applications for road closures and the street parade\, and cancelled the other facilities and personnel required for our ‘normal’ Anzac Day Service.\nEven though things have changed we have not been able to reinstate all the elements required for our usual Community Service.\nThe Eastbourne Memorial RSA will ensure that the Memorial Gates and the Field of Remembrance will be well presented – the New Zealand Flag will be flown and a Floral Tribute laid – and Poppies will adorn the Field of Remembrance.\nMembers of the Eastbourne community are encouraged to visit these special places during the day and are welcome to lay a tribute.
