SUMMARY:Book launch - Eastbourne: A Postcard Village\, by Nik Zangouropoulos and Alison Carew
DESCRIPTION:Book launch: Eastbourne: A Postcard Village\, by Nik Zangouropoulos and Alison Carew: Sunday 16 November at 2pm\, in the East Harbour Women’s Club rooms\, 145 Muritai Road\nTo recap: Nik is an avid and very knowledgeable postcard collector who specialises in cards of the Wellington region. He estimates he owns about 90% of the 370 known postcards of the eastern bays. Several years ago he gave a talk to our members on the subject\, and mentioned that he’d like to do a book about Eastbourne postcards\, so I offered to help with the local history content.\nAnd that’s how our collaboration started. We began working on the book over a year ago\, hoping to publish it in time for Christmas 2024. But we soon realised the project was much bigger than we’d expected\, and decided to put it on hold until this year.\nAnd we’re very glad we did\, because in the meantime Nik discovered a number of postcards of the eastern bays that he didn’t even know existed. Being able to include these gems in the book has boosted the number of featured cards to 66\, and the size of the book to 125 pages.\nObviously the postcards are the stars of the show\, but the book also has chapters by Nik on the history of postcards and by me on the history of the eastern bays. These overviews provide context for the cards\, and so do the introductions to each subject section. \nSo it’s been quite a journey\, culminating in the event next Sunday afternoon when the book will be officially launched by our Harbour Ward Councillor Tui Lewis.\nThe books are $30 each\, and if you’re thinking of buying copies at the launch we suggest you bring cash\, as we won’t have an eftpos facility. \nThe launch will be our final event for the year – and what a busy year it’s been! So we look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Waste collection: Red (general) & Yellow (paper/plastics/cans)
DESCRIPTION:Non recyclable rubbish\nYour rubbish bin / ipupara \nThis is your wheelie bin with the red lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nWhen green waste goes to landfill it creates methane\, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.\nInstead of putting it in your red bin\, consider composting or using our green waste collection.\nDid you know? I get collected weekly. \n  \n  \nPaper & plastics\nYour recycling bin with the yellow lid / ipu hangarua \nThis is your wheelie bin with the yellow lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nI get collected on yellow weeks. When incorrect items end up in the wrong bin\, they contaminate the recycling / ipu hangarua\, which can mean the whole truckload ends up going to landfill. That’s why we need to make sure the only thing that goes in our yellow bins is the stuff that’s too good to waste. \n  \nWhat can be put in the Yellow bin? \nYES \n\nPaper and cardboard\nTins and cans\nPlastic containers marked with these symbols\, often embossed on bottom of item\nPlastic symbols 1\,2\,5\n\nNO \n\nGlass\nBatteries\nNappies\nDrink cartons / Tetrapak\nPolystyrene\, clothes hangers and toys\nSoft plastics\, cling film and strapping\n\nNote: Many of these non recyclable materials can be recycled through other channels – some options are listed here.

SUMMARY:Final day to volunteer for Summer Pool supervision
DESCRIPTION:We urgently need more volunteers to train as lifeguards for our Summer Pool – and the final day to sign up is Monday\, 19 January.\n\n\nSo far\, three amazing community members have stepped up and completed their training. We are incredibly grateful – but it’s not enough. Without additional volunteers\, Eastbourne Pool will be forced to close in mid-February.\n\n\nKeeping the pool open for the full season is critical. It allows our school and swim club to complete their swimming programmes\, ensuring our children can build confidence and safety in the water – something that matters to all of us as a coastal community.\nhttps://eastbourne.nz/2026/01/14/last-chance-to-keep-our-pool-open-for-the-full-season/
