SUMMARY:Waste collection: Red (general) & Yellow (paper/plastics/cans)
DESCRIPTION:Non recyclable rubbish\nYour rubbish bin / ipupara \nThis is your wheelie bin with the red lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nWhen green waste goes to landfill it creates methane\, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.\nInstead of putting it in your red bin\, consider composting or using our green waste collection.\nDid you know? I get collected weekly. \n  \n  \nPaper & plastics\nYour recycling bin with the yellow lid / ipu hangarua \nThis is your wheelie bin with the yellow lid\, and it’s just for rubbish. \nI get collected on yellow weeks. When incorrect items end up in the wrong bin\, they contaminate the recycling / ipu hangarua\, which can mean the whole truckload ends up going to landfill. That’s why we need to make sure the only thing that goes in our yellow bins is the stuff that’s too good to waste. \n  \nWhat can be put in the Yellow bin? \nYES \n\nPaper and cardboard\nTins and cans\nPlastic containers marked with these symbols\, often embossed on bottom of item\nPlastic symbols 1\,2\,5\n\nNO \n\nGlass\nBatteries\nNappies\nDrink cartons / Tetrapak\nPolystyrene\, clothes hangers and toys\nSoft plastics\, cling film and strapping\n\nNote: Many of these non recyclable materials can be recycled through other channels – some options are listed here.

SUMMARY:E-Waste - free collection 10-18 August
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This event is now closed. \n\nAbout 350 households participated:\n150 laptop and desktop computers\,\n100 TVs and computer monitors\,\n300+ mobile phones\nAnd many more boxes of other things.\n\n\nFAQ:\n\nWill there be limit to the number of devices I can give? Yes\, there are physical and financial limits to this free disposal service so we recommend you book your collection in advanced.\nWhat types of electrical devices will you collect? The priority of this collection is the most toxic stuff (computers\, mobile phones\, tablets etc.)\, but really we will take anything with a plug off your hands. The actual list of what Echo will accept is down the bottom of the EchoTech website.\nWhat types of things will you NOT collect? We will not collect hazardous waste like paint\, chemicals\, or LPG Gas Bottles. These you can take to Silverstream landfill. We will also not accept CDs\, DVDs\, VHS\, LED or household lightbulbs\, these can go in your red bin.\nWhat do I need to do with my devices before handing them over? We recommend – if you can – to backup any data you want first\, permanently delete personal data\, remove memory cards (if accessible)\, and sign out of any accounts that you may have opened. We will treat all devices as if they containing confidential data\, and ensure a secure transit to their final destination as determined by EchoTech.\n\n  \n \n \nResources: Some useful e-waste related resources: \n\nA good guide on how to delete your data\, plus some privacy guidance from the UK government.\nSubstances in e-waste aren’t biodegradable and will accumulate in our air\, the ground – and in our water. Even though e-waste only accounts for 2% of solid waste\, it produces a staggering 70% of discarded hazardous materials\nNew Zealand’s e-waste per capita is 19.6kg per person\, and one of the worst in the world.\nThe climate impacts from information technology is disproportionately high\, and still accelerating. For a full study of the impacts this is a solid read.\nThe UN have published a good presentation of the information technology sector wide analysis.
