It also provides the opportunity to hear about the good work being done by MIRO volunteers and meet other members. \nThe AGM will start promptly at 6.00 p.m. This year the formal part of the meeting includes the proposal to adopt a new Constitution for MIRO as is required under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. SUMMARY:E-Waste - free collection 10-18 August
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This event is now closed. \n\nAbout 350 households participated:\n150 laptop and desktop computers\,\n100 TVs and computer monitors\,\n300+ mobile phones\nAnd many more boxes of other things.\n\n\nFAQ:\n\nWill there be limit to the number of devices I can give? Yes\, there are physical and financial limits to this free disposal service so we recommend you book your collection in advanced.\nWhat types of electrical devices will you collect? The priority of this collection is the most toxic stuff (computers\, mobile phones\, tablets etc.)\, but really we will take anything with a plug off your hands. The actual list of what Echo will accept is down the bottom of the EchoTech website.\nWhat types of things will you NOT collect? We will not collect hazardous waste like paint\, chemicals\, or LPG Gas Bottles. These you can take to Silverstream landfill. We will also not accept CDs\, DVDs\, VHS\, LED or household lightbulbs\, these can go in your red bin.\nWhat do I need to do with my devices before handing them over? We recommend – if you can – to backup any data you want first\, permanently delete personal data\, remove memory cards (if accessible)\, and sign out of any accounts that you may have opened. We will treat all devices as if they containing confidential data\, and ensure a secure transit to their final destination as determined by EchoTech.\n\n  \n \n \nResources: Some useful e-waste related resources: \n\nA good guide on how to delete your data\, plus some privacy guidance from the UK government.\nSubstances in e-waste aren’t biodegradable and will accumulate in our air\, the ground – and in our water. Even though e-waste only accounts for 2% of solid waste\, it produces a staggering 70% of discarded hazardous materials\nNew Zealand’s e-waste per capita is 19.6kg per person\, and one of the worst in the world.\nThe climate impacts from information technology is disproportionately high\, and still accelerating. For a full study of the impacts this is a solid read.\nThe UN have published a good presentation of the information technology sector wide analysis.

SUMMARY:Penguin Dog Avoidance Training
DESCRIPTION:While your dog may not attack a Penguin\, just approaching a penguin while it is travelling between the sea and its nest\, or sniffing around the nesting area can result in the penguin abandoning its nest. This training is designed to significantly decrease the likelihood that your dog would approach penguins or go near their nests.\nThe Trainer\nWilly Marsh will be the trainer. Willy has extensive experience conducting Kiwi Dog Avoidance Training throughout New Zealand. He has also conducted Penguin Avoidance Training.\nFeedback From Dog Owners\nFeedback from dog owners who participated in a recent “pilot” held in Eastbourne was very positive. All owners were happy with the training and the way their dog was treated; plus\, they felt they learned something new about their dog. The dog breeds included English Setter\, Huntaway/Cross\, Labradoodle\,Springer Spaniel\, Sproodle\, Cavoodle\, and a ShihTzu/Pomeranian. \nNext Eastbourne Training Days – Saturday 14 th &Sunday 15 th September 2024\nFor further Information and to book your dog’s individual training session email ross@penguinavoidance.org

SUMMARY:Butterfly creek picnic area will be closed 18-20th
DESCRIPTION:Butterfly creek picnic area will be closed 18-20th September – Whilst tree felling at the Kowhai/ Mackenzie track junction is being undertaken park users should wait at the barrier to be guided through the work site.\nHi Eastbourne community board and stake holders\nAfter assessing the Safety and Health of trees at Butterfly creek picnic area in 2023 Greater Wellington Regional council has undertaken an annual inspection to reassess the situation. The good news is that the two trees assessed for removal last year\, that were reassessed and not removed but trimmed are not showing signs of further decline and will remain. A small amount of further work is required to remove dead limbs and a further 3 dead standing trees at risk of falling.\nA single standing tree at the junction between Makenzie and Kowhai street tracks will also be felled to reduce the risk to the public standing at the map board or sitting on the bench.\nButterfly creek picnic area will be closed 18-20th September whilst the work is undertaken\nWhilst tree felling at the Kowhai/Makenzie track junction is being undertaken park users should wait at the barrier to be guided through the work site.\nWe also plan to plant 12 new beach trees to help mitigate the tree removal work\nBackground reminder\nThe beech trees at the Butterfly Creek Picnic area are under stress due to soil compaction caused by high visitor numbers. This has resulted in low soil aeration\, poor soil condition\, and limited water penetration. These factors have contributed to the death and decline of tree roots\, making the trees more susceptible to fungi such as Laetiporus portentosus and general dieback.

SUMMARY:Water Restrictions begin - Level 1
DESCRIPTION:Water Restriction Level 1\nUse sprinklers every second day \nIf you live in an even numbered house\, you can use sprinklers or irrigation systems on even numbered days between 6-8am and 7-9pm. If you live in an odd numbered house\, the same rules apply for odd numbered days. \nThis helps limit water evaporating in the heat of the day\, spreads the load of daily water demand\, and helps manage daily supply levels. \nYou can use handheld watering devices any time\, on any day\, so long as you don’t leave them unattended. \nWater restriction Level 1 applies all year round for Upper Hutt and South Wairarapa. Level 1 automatically comes into effect with Daylight Savings in September for Lower Hutt\, Wellington City and Porirua. \nhttps://www.wellingtonwater.co.nz/resources/topic/water-conservation/water-restrictions/

SUMMARY:HSE talk - Rudi Mack "First Contacts : the early Pacific and European accounts of Abel Tasman's 1642 Voyage"
DESCRIPTION:The Society’s next event for members is another author talking about another aspect of our history\, and promises to be just as interesting and challenging. On Sunday 13 October at 2 pm at the East Harbour Women’s Club Rooms in Muritai Road\, local resident and bibliophile Rudi Mack will introduce us to his new book “First Contacts – the early Pacific and European accounts of Abel Tasman’s 1642 Voyage”.  Rudi takes a new approach\, offering a different perspective than previous histories about the voyage. By cross-referencing textual and visual sources with each other\, new interpretations of certain events during the voyage emerge. The results are often surprising\, particularly regarding the first encounters between Europeans and Indigenous Peoples in Tasmania\, Aotearoa\, and Tonga. Afternoon tea to follow. Free to members\, visitors welcome and koha appreciated.\nMore about this in early October.\nMeantime\, if you can’t wait till then\, you can sample the delights of the Wellington Heritage Festival\, https://wellingtonheritagefestival.co.nz/events/ which has a rich range of offerings for those with a taste for our cultural and social history.

SUMMARY:Eastbourne Community Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting also usually has various reports from projects and other issues on-going in the community which are worth listening to\, as well as normal board business. \nThe Chair’s report and meeting agenda are available to download here – and the Chair’s report is appended below. We will also notify you of this and other community issues via our email newsletter which you can subscribe to ( and unsubscribe at any time). \n\nEastbourne Community Board\nChair’s Report October 2024\nThe Eastbourne Community Board’s (ECB) next public meeting is at 7.15pm on Tuesday 22 October. The agenda is posted on the Hutt City Council website and our eastbourne.nz website about a week before each meeting. ECB public meetings are now held in the Eastbourne library. Residents are always welcome at Board meetings. \nAt the start of the meeting\, anyone may speak (for up to three minutes) under public comment on any community topic. Please note that our standing orders don’t allow for general discussion and questions from the floor. If you have a question about any of the presentations on the agenda\, please let a member of the ECB know before the meeting and we can ask it for you before or during the meeting. If we can ask questions ahead of the meeting\, presenters are more likely to be able to prepare an answer. \nThe presentations at the meeting on 22 October (at the time of writing) are: \n\nLand Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024: A verbal presentation by the Head of Transport.\nTupua Horo Nuku and bird protection areas update: A verbal presentation by Council’s Project Delivery Manager – Transport\nZ Energy – replacement fuel pipeline\, Seaview: A verbal presentation by Brent Cooper\, Project Engineer\, Z Energy\nPresentation by Local Councillor from Greater Wellington Regional Council: A verbal update by Cr Quentin Duthie\n\nFive “Eastbournes” Awards will be presented at the October meeting to individuals who have contributed to Eastbourne and the Eastern Bays. Activity \nHere is a list of issues and activities addressed by members of the Eastbourne Community Board (ECB) since the previous meeting and Chair’s Report in August: \nThe ECB supported our written submission with a verbal submission at the hearing on Council’s representation review on 26 August. Along with many submitters from Eastbourne and the Eastern Bays\, we spoke in support of retaining community boards. The representation review report prepared by an independent panel recommended disestablishing all three community boards in Hutt City. 56% of all submissions were from Eastbourne and the Eastern Bays and nearly all of these supported retaining community boards. \nThe ECB also addressed Council on 10 September\, when Councillors voted to disestablish community boards. \nWe have lodged an appeal and objection to the Council’s decision. The basis of our appeal is that we believe the panel made several errors in its review. We are unlikely to know the outcome for several months. We appreciate the encouragement and support from many Eastbourne residents. \nThe representation review also examined Ward boundaries. The ECB and several other submitters recommended that Pencarrow Road be moved from Wainuiomata Ward to Harbour Ward. We are pleased that the Council voted to make this change (pending any objections). \nMost ECB members attended the Local Government New Zealand conference in Wellington\, where we networked with community board members from around the motu. \nThe ECB received a Highly Commended Award in the Community Board Enhancing Communities category for our mahi on the Tupua Horo Nuku project at the conference. \nAttended the inaugural Lower Hutt City Summit in September. \nWe have sought volunteers who Council’s pool team will train as assistant lifeguards to work at the Eastbourne Summer Pool and enable its season to be extended by two weeks. We appreciate all the interest in this initiative and are grateful to Council for offering the opportunity. \nContinued to liaise with the Eastbourne Bowls Club and Council about the proposed relocation to ESSC. Watch out for community consultation about this. \nWe have responded to calls and emails from residents and news media about the new fence at Bishop Park\, which is part of the new bird protection area’s conditions\, and about the signage about dog access. \nMembers of the ECB met with Drowning Prevention Aotearoa to discuss signage and equipment to improve safety on beaches in Eastbourne and the Eastern Bays\, and especially Rona Wharf\, where people jump into dangerously shallow water. \nSaved more tetra paks and batteries from landfill via the collection bins in the Eastbourne Library foyer\, thanks to Bruce Spedding’s efforts. \nOther things to note \nThe Community Engagement Fund has been replaced by a Community Climate Action Fund. The ECB has chosen to run one round of funding per year rather than two. The first round for Eastbourne will be in April/May 2025. \nWe are delighted to see how many young cyclists use the informal bike skills track at Burdan’s Gate. If you would like to be involved in developing the track further and in maintenance\, please contact Frank Vickers. \nCommunication \nOne of the Board’s roles is communicating relevant matters\, proposals\, consultations\, and issues with residents. We do this through our Facebook page (nearly 800 followers)\, the eastbourne.nz website\, our email list (220+ subscribers)\, our regular column in the Eastbourne Herald\, and the digital display board at the library. \nResidents can also contact Board members directly: \n\nBelinda Moss (Chair) belinda.moss@huttcity.govt.nz 029 494 1615\nEmily Keddell (Deputy Chair) emily.keddell@huttcity.govt.nz 021 188 5106\nBruce Spedding bruce.spedding@huttcity.govt.nz 021 029 74741\nFrank Vickers frank.vickers@huttcity.govt.nz 027 406 1419\nMurray Gibbons murray.gibbons@huttcity.govt.nz 04 562 8567\nTui Lewis (Ward Councillor) tui.lewis@huttcity.govt.nz 021 271 6249\n\nBelinda Moss 12 October 2024

DESCRIPTION:Mistaken identities\, evil adversaries\, plot twists\, and absurd excesses are in store for Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe’s final production of the year\, The Foreigner by Larry Shue.  Rehearsals are now underway. \nWinner of two Obie Awards\, two Outer Critic Circle Awards and named the Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production of 1984\, this modern farce remains a staple of regional and community theatre. \nDirector Suzy Cain\, (along with Assistant Director Nicola Tod) has assembled a fantastic cast and Cain is looking forward to working on the play again.  She did the role of Catherine about 30 years ago at the Riverside Theatre\, Vero Beach\, Florida (See photo). \n“I loved the play from the first read-through back then – not only is it a hilarious play\, full of ridiculous circumstances\, witty dialogue\, and great characters\, but it deals with some timeless themes – believing in yourself\, honestly is the best policy in the end\, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.  Charlie Baker (the main character) is someone we can all see bits our ourselves in – shy\, insecure\, wanting to be left alone for now….who blossoms over the timeframe of the play into someone who feels confident\, smart\, and accepted. “ \nDon’t miss this off-beat comedy that is sure to tickle your funny bone! \nThe production dates are: 24\, 25\, 26\, and 31 October and 1 and 2 November at 7.30pm\, Muritai School auditorium\, Eastbourne. \nIn October\, tickets will be available from  The Foreigner – Lower Hutt – Eventfinda  or on the door on the night. \nWarning: this production contains a comic depiction of the Ku Klux Klan \n
