Introducing 'A guide to just transitions for communities in Aotearoa NZ'. The idea of 'just transitions' has been around for decades. A request for feedback

I would like to get feedback and any offers of help etc. on this proposal - I do see a role for this network in being represented and hopefully involved in this exercise to raise community awareness and response. I posted this recently in response to an enquiry by Hugh Walcott on interest in resurrecting the Eastbourne Games. Response was muted, but it's been a while, and I feel the focus I'm suggesting could get a response. Contact me (Bruce Spedding)

The Resilience Games / Survival Eastbourne (making fun of disasters?)

The recent and continuing extreme weather events, climate change and the ever present threat of earthquakes make it imperative that we do what we can to Reduce, get Ready, Respond and Recover from emergencies. Wellington Regional Emergency Management (WREMO) are proposing to run some workshops and practices on this.

The ECB would like to combine this with the highly successful Eastbourne Games format by running an event where teams of all ages from each bay or area compete in a variety of tasks related to emergency preparation and response. We would get emergency services involved as well as any other groups that may be called upon to assist in the event of an emergency. It would try to be fun as well as educational, with the outcome of each bay or group having a plan and resources prepared for most contingencies.

There could be prizes of emergency equipment, but the real winners would be all of us, better prepared! What do you think?

Introducing 'A guide to just transitions for communities in Aotearoa NZ'.

The idea of 'just transitions' has been around for decades. Responses to major challenges including climate change are amplifying its importance to communities. What does it mean today for Aotearoa New Zealand? How is it shaped by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori the Māori worldview? What actions are communities already taking? And how could communities mobilise the vision and leadership to change how we approach the challenges and opportunities ahead and ensure no one is left behind? A guide to just transitions for communities in Aotearoa New Zealand was created to help communities and organisations run their own just transition processes in response to challenges like climate change, rapid technological change, employment changes in regions and the transition to renewable energy in a way that fairly shares both the positive and negative effects.

This free online seminar will feature a panel of experts and practitioners who helped develop the guide. Come along to learn about why the guide was created and what the guide offers: practical ideas, methods, tools and case studies enabling communities to come together to solve problems in ways that work better for everyone.

A guide to just transitions for communities in Aotearoa New Zealand is available online and can be downloaded for free from the websites of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and Motu Economic and Public Policy Research.

The AI for the Environment Hackathon Festival is back for another year. Taking place across four initial locations, with more to be announced in the coming weeks.

This year our problems to solve are based on the five key environmental outcomes (AI for the Environment Report 2022). We have expanded these to make them more relevant to all participants in 2023.

Participants will learn many new skills, meet like-minded peers, and network with sponsors and mentors. At the end of the hackathon teams will demonstrate their project in front of a judging panel who select the winner. The best four winners have a chance to pitch their idea at the AI Summit 23.
