Submission on Adaption to Climate Change
A small local group of people who have an interest in adaptation to climate change has been preparing a submission to the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment, which is conducting an inquiry into the issue of community-led retreat and options for it.
The deadline has been very tight - Wednesday, 1 November. The terms of reference were issued on 24 August ( Inquiry into climate adaptation - New Zealand Parliament (www.parliament.nz)and accompanying position papers were available from late September. What we have tried to do in the time available is to summarise the major risks to Eastbourne and the Bays from climate change and the current degree of preparedness for them. This is very much a working document and our hope is that it will provide a starting point for suggested actions in 2024. What will happen to the inquiry now there has been a change in government is unknown.
Our draft is attached and there will be time over the coming months to discuss it in detail, when many of you will be able to add other ideas and perspectives. If you see any glaring omission let us know now, but the main aim at present was simply to get the submission out in time and to clarify what are some of the risks to this area.

GNS Science hosts this National Science Challenge programme, whose purpose is to accelerate our resilience to natural hazards.
Overview
This is one of 11 National Science Challenges set up by government to tackle the big science questions facing Aotearoa New Zealand. We bring together physical science, mātauranga Māori, social science, and engineering research to develop policies and tools that reduce the social and economic impacts of future natural hazard events.
The Resilience Challenge is a formal collaboration between thirteen partner organizations. The programme is hosted by GNS Science, and other partner organisations host individual research programmes and projects.
