COMMUNITY RESILIENCE: CLIMATE ADAPTATION, EARTHQUAKES, BASIC NEEDS – THEY’RE ALL CONNECTED – BUT WE’RE NOT

Presented by Jack Santa Barbara

This webinar will discuss the uncertain future we face with multiple risks increasing steadily.  Governments are failing to protect us, placing responsibility onto local communities.  Community resilience building to ensure everyone’s universal basic needs are met is a critical aspect of a secure future.  There are many examples of communities beginning this process, but more is urgently needed.

Is your community ready?  Be part of the discussion about how to build community resilience where you live.

Jack is a long-time member of Our Climate Declaration and has organized and facilitated many of OCD’s Economy of Enough webinars over the years.  He is a retired academic and CEO, and has been a peace, environmental and justice activist for many decades.  He is currently facilitating a DANZ (Degrowth Aotearoa New Zealand) initiated Community Resilience project.

Flood victims who have fair warning may have less case for compensation, MPs warn

Flood victims who have fair warning of the risk may have less case for government compensation, a cross-party committee of MPs has said.

The Finance and Expenditure Select Committee released a report on Wednesday about adapting to climate change ahead of a new law expected next year.

Hundreds of thousands of people live on land exposed to river or coastal flooding already, and the frequency and severity of flooding is increasing.

MPs on the committee agreed that: "Individuals should be responsible for managing their own natural hazard risk."

They said: "The longer the information about the risk has been available, the less case there is for socialising the cost if the risk is realised."

National MP Stuart Smith is chair of the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee, which produced the report.

Climate adaptation report called "vague"

A Parliamentary committee has released its report into climate change adaptation. But some of the committee's own MPs think it is too vague.

Parliament's Finance and Expenditure Select Committee tabled its inquiry report yesterday.

It sets out some principles for forthcoming legislation the Climate Change minister wants to get cross-party support for.

This covers issues from who pays for resilience measures, to buyouts after weather events, to managed retreat from some residential areas.

However, the report's preamble states some of the committee's own members believe its recommendations are vague, open to interpretation, in places contradictory, and avoid some of the most challenging questions.

Datacom director on growing data centre power demand

One of the country's experts on data centres says the use of artificial intelligence will explode the data centre energy demand.

It is a boom time for data centres in this country, with predictions that data centres could soon match the Tiwai Point aluminium smelters as the country's biggest power user by 2030.

A recent analysis by business consultancy EY found data centres said while data centres could be something of a boon to this country economically, investment is needed to boost the country's electricity generation.

There have been several major deals where the data centre company pays for what are essentially certificates to be able to say their product is backed by 100 per cent renewable energy.

One example is Contact Energy's Te Huka 3 geothermal plant, which it says is partly funded by its 10-year deal with Microsoft, which is building three data centres in Auckland. But increasing use of AI is expected to surge power demand from these kinds of sites.

Datacom's Andrew Green tells Kathryn just how AI explodes energy use for data centres.
