East bY West Update: WE’RE INCREASING OUR SERVICES!
East by West will be trialling an expanded weekday service from Monday 21st August until the end of 2023.
This is in the response to the feedback we received from our survey earlier this year. You’ll notice:
⛴ Services run every 20 minutes during peak commute times mornings and afternoons
⛴ Earlier morning and later evening departure options (with a later sailing to start in November)
⛴ The 12pm and 2pm ferries now run directly from Queens Wharf to Days Bay
You can click here for the full timetable https://eastbywest.co.nz/news
We have also teamed up with Wildfinder to run a free shuttle that meets four morning departures and four afternoon arrivals to Days Bay, also starting from Monday 21st August. The shuttle is fairly limited at 11 seats, but will be free of charge and run along the current bus route, stopping at all bus stops from Days Bay Wharf to Tawa Street (and vice versa). This trial will run through to the 20th October (tweaks may be made during this process to respond to demand or lack of). Check out more information about the shuttle trial, including times, here https://eastbywest.co.nz/commuter-shuttle-trial
As mentioned, both of these trials are designed to provide a better service to the Eastern Bays. While we do need to see an uptick in patronage to maintain them into the future, we’re giving them a good amount of time to ensure the viability of any permanent change and guide our decision-making.
Information about upcoming fare changes from 1 September (which includes an additional trial for our commuters), will be out next week.

Muritai Road raised crossing near Rimu Street

Council officers are proposing the conversion of the existing zebra crossing on Muritai Road into a raised pedestrian crossing to address critical safety and accessibility concerns that have been raised with regard to this crossing.

The primary motivation behind this conversion is to ensure the safety and well-being of vision-impaired residents who rely on this crossing to access essential healthcare facilities. Over time, some unfortunate injuries have occurred, highlighting the urgent need for a safer and more accessible solution.

In addition to the safety aspect, the raised pedestrian crossing will serve as an effective traffic calming measure, encouraging drivers to slow down and prioritise the safety of pedestrians. This initiative aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

The raised pedestrian crossing will be designed to align with the footpath, ensuring a seamless, gradual gradient, and a smooth walking surface for pedestrians without any surprises or hazards. 8. By addressing these aspects, Council aspires to foster a community that is not only safe but also inclusive, making it easier for everyone, especially vision and mobility-impaired residents, to access the crossing.

From 7 to 21 August, residents, businesses and essential services will be invited to participate in the consultation process. Feedback is crucial to ensure the planned installation addresses community accessibility needs. Submissions can be sent via email at TRSubmission@huttcity.govt.nz or by calling 04 570 6666.

Regional Waste Management and Minimisation Plan

The eight councils in the Wellington region have collaboratively developed a draft Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023– 2029. This is an opportunity to review the region’s current waste situation and strategic direction as a collective and as individual councils, to ensure the region is heading in the right direction to reduce waste. The Plan is open for consultation until 1 September 2023. https://www.lesswastegreaterplace.co.nz/

Indigenous Biodiversity Strategy

Council is developing an Indigenous Biodiversity Strategy which will guide Council, Mana Whenua and the wider community in working together to protect and restore indigenous biodiversity. The strategy will be supported by a series of implementation programmes and plans, from revegetation planting projects to pest control and improving water quality. The draft strategy is available for public consultation until 20 August 2023. https://haveyoursay.huttcity.govt.nz/indigenous-biodiversity-strategy
