I hope you all coped with and are recovered from our latest storm. Not as bad as some, but still a timely reminder of the need to be prepared, and also what we may expect more of in the future.

You may have noticed a flurry of email updates from Eastbourne.nz over the duration - for those of us that use Facebook much of the information was there first, however there wasn't a consistent / reliable channel available, and there were comments that those who don't use social media (a lot more than many realise) would be missing out. Not a lot we can do, but the emails were an attempt to broaden the information we were getting / finding. Feedback on how the latest event was managed, any personal, community or general thoughts would be appreciated.

The WREMO Emergency Hub exercise in Day's Bay at Wellesley School went off well, and tI think those who attended would agree it was a useful exercise we hope to repeat at Muritai School later in the year.

The website eastbourne.nz has lists of current consultations including HCC, GWRC, national/government and others - check them out.

There are some new items below - this newsletter was begun a while ago so some may have "expired" but have been noted for information purposes.

Empowering Communities: Making Climate Risk Information Meaningful and Actionable

About the Project

Coastal communities in Aotearoa are increasingly exposed to climate-related hazards such as sea-level rise. Yet, the data and tools used to understand and communicate these risks often fail to connect with the lived experiences and decision-making needs of communities.

This research initiative is exploring how climate risk information can be more effectively designed and delivered to support local resilience and planning. This project is part of a broader effort to co-develop inclusive and practical approaches to climate risk modelling across Aotearoa, within Our Changing Coast research programme and as part of broader climate risk information efforts.

Hui Purpose

We are inviting local council staff and community organisations to join a 1.5-hour hui.Your perspectives will help shape a research programme that responds to real-world needs and supports communities in navigating climate challenges.

The key goal of the session is to understand:

• What matters most to you when thinking about coastal climate hazards
• How climate risk information could be made more useful and accessible in your context and to local communities
• What gaps, barriers or opportunities you see in current tools or communication

Intended Outputs

Your input will directly contribute to:

• Shaping prototype ideas for a community-responsive research programme
• Informing broader national efforts in climate risk communication and modelling
• Building an ongoing relationship for future engagement and co-design

We all want Aotearoa to be a place where the planet and people are respected. A place where people are able to have agency over the repairability and longevity of their belongings and manufacturers prioritise designing repairable products.

Most of us have experienced the frustration of throwing away broken items that should be repairable. Now, for the first time, Parliament has voted the Consumer Guarantees (Right to Repair) Amendment Bill through to the Select Committee, and we have the opportunity to make our voices heard and advance this legislation through Parliament. 

The Consumer Guarantees (Right to Repair) Amendment Bill takes us closer to a Right to Repair in New Zealand. It would change the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) to require manufacturers to make spare parts and repair information available to consumers and independent repairers.

Public submissions on the Bill closed on the 3rd of April.

The course was on Linkedin Learning, but since we can all get free continuous access through our library membership I decided to check it out there.

If you haven't tried it, just log into the https://library.huttcity.govt.nz/ , log in and then navigate to Explore > Digital library > Learning eResources > Linkedin Learning. You'll then need to log in again using your library card number and password. I searched on the title and found it immediately, but then I searched on "climate" = 249 course/video results!

I guess I'll need to be selective?
