Eastern Bays Community Resilience Expo

Could you be involved?

Eastbourne Community Board in conjunction with WREMO, FENZ and others are running an expo on Sunday 24th March 2024 to promote civil defence / community readiness to any issues our community might face - earthquake, tsunami, flooding, storms, fires, road closures, loss of drinking or waste water ... the list goes on.

This is a broad scope event, going from the day to day disruptions that the community may experience, through the more typical emergencies such as fire, flooding, earthquakes etc. and on to the short and long term consequences of climate change.

We have a growing list of organisations and businesses signing up, and by including a "trade fair" aspect we are hoping that there will be plenty of businesses who see themselves as being relevant to one or more of the four "Rs" - Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery.

There is no charge to exhibit. Businesses who are marketing their products or services are being asked to donate some sort of "spot prize" to help promote and build attendance - it could be actual products or vouchers/discounts. 

Local businesses or often critical in the preparation and response phases of an emergency, so if you feel you have a role to play please come along and tell the community.

If you know of any other organisations or businesses that may be relevant or interested please pass this invitation on or let me know and I'll follow up.

If you'd be interested in sponsoring the event, we are keeping the actual running costs to a minimum and are currently largely supported by the Eastbourne Games Community Trust plus the Eastbourne Community Board, and the Lions Club with volunteers, but it would be nice to support all the volunteers in some way if you are keen and have ideas. The best support is to get the community along, make it a  success, and make the community more resilient.

Most importantly, tell your family, friends and community about the event, and encourage them to attend.

Eastbourne Venues wanted

The Eastbourne.nz website is intended to provide a one stop shop for information on our community. One common need is a venue for events, from simple casual meetings to major events (like the Expo). We are compiling a list of venues for the Eastern Bays and Seaview, from cafes to halls and everything in between - please check it out, and if you have any corrections or additions please let us know. We would like all the known details such as; location, size, capacity, seating, access, facilities, cost, availability and of course a link or contact details.

Consultations

Fire and Emergency New Zealand are Consulting on 2024 Fire Plans.

Some of you may be aware of the apparently sudden closure of the Pencarrow Road and the Lakes / Baring Head sections of the East Harbour Regional Park. This was seen as bad for local business and the subject of quite a lot of criticism. This consultation is an opportunity to find out more about what drives these responses, and have your say. Closes 14 March.
Business Disruption can come in many forms – a major earthquake, flood, a prolonged power cut or even the sudden unavailability of you or a skilled member of your staff.
It is important that businesses are prepared and have a plan in place to respond to emergencies.
Having a plan in place and practising it ensure you can keep doing what you do best. WREMO run a free two-hour business continuity workshop which is tailored for community businesses. This in-person workshop is an opportunity to learn not only from your local Emergency Advisor but the collective experience of other community businesses.
Throughout the two hours they will guide you through our 10 steps to business continuity planning.
WREMO will be at the Expo - if you have questions or would like to attend a workshop - come along and ask.

The Eastbourne Business Group also has a Facebook page where information can be posted and questions and comments made. We occasionally post information we think may be of value to the local business community, such as announcements, meetings and presentations from HCC and the Hutt Chamber of Commerce. This is also a way for the business community to communicate with each other.
