LoRaWAN technology for resilient communications
We currently run a VHF radio network between the Bays as a backup in case other communications fail. This technology uses the system originally set up for civil defence, it is aging and will soon be phased out, includng repeaters – and it’s possible the channels may be repurposed and we would lose access.
We are exploring an new technology approach based on LoRaWAN technology – currently trialling a Meshtastic option. Information on this is included below.
This is a proposed national network – outside the scope of what we are working on but potentially useful if it gets off the ground.
-
During non-emergency periods, volunteers will monitor our dedicated “Calling” channels, responding to assistance requests from network users and liaising with Police, RCCNZ, FENZ, or Ambulance as needed.
-
During major emergencies, these centres will act as regional coordination hubs — monitoring traffic, relaying information, and working closely with CDEM groups and partner agencies to support local response operations.
