Meshtastic logoLoRaWAN technology for resilient communications

We currently run a VHF radio network between the Bays as a backup in case other communications fail. This technology uses the system originally set up for civil defence, it is aging and will soon be phased out, includng repeaters – and it’s possible the channels may be repurposed and we would lose access.

We are exploring an new technology approach based on LoRaWAN technology – currently trialling a Meshtastic option. Information on this is included below.

Kaitiaki Network

This is a proposed national network – outside the scope of what we are working on but potentially useful if it gets off the ground.

We’re aiming to establish a nationwide repeater network, currently proposed to use DMR Tier III trunking. This may change if we find a more suitable or cost-effective alternative that still provides accessibility for everyday users.
Our goal is to improve communications resilience by providing subsidised radios to marae and community centres, pre-programmed to the network. Radios would also be available for purchase by community members.
The network will be divided into eight regions, each interconnected via the internet to form the national system. Importantly, each region will be designed to operate independently if its internet connection fails — ensuring local self-sufficiency during outages.
Each region will also host a “Dispatch Centre”, ideally staffed on a rostered basis.
  • During non-emergency periods, volunteers will monitor our dedicated “Calling” channels, responding to assistance requests from network users and liaising with Police, RCCNZ, FENZ, or Ambulance as needed.
  • During major emergencies, these centres will act as regional coordination hubs — monitoring traffic, relaying information, and working closely with CDEM groups and partner agencies to support local response operations.
We also intend for the network to be available to CDEM, RATS, LandSAR, and other emergency or community organisations to use as needed.
