Waste collection – Red (general), Yellow (paper/plastics/cans) & Green (organic/garden)

April 29 @ 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM NZST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every 4 weeks that begins at 8:00 AM on Monday, repeating indefinitely

Red bin (general rubbish)
Non recyclable rubbish

Your rubbish bin / ipupara

This is your wheelie bin with the red lid, and it’s just for rubbish.

When green waste goes to landfill it creates methane, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.
Instead of putting it in your red bin, consider composting or using our green waste collection.
Did you know? I get collected weekly.

Green bin
Green bin – garden/organic

Your green (garden) waste bin / ipupara tupu

Your green bin is for garden waste only. What can you put in this bin?

YES

  • Grass clippings
  • Plant cuttings
  • NO
  • Rubbish
  • Concrete or stone
  • Nappies
  • Food waste

Tip: If you don’t have a green waste bin, or you have large quantities of green waste, you can take it to the Silverstream transfer station. If you have compost waste, here are some options.

Yellow bin
Paper & plastics

Your recycling bin with the yellow lid / ipu hangarua

This is your wheelie bin with the yellow lid, and it’s just for rubbish.

I get collected on yellow weeks. When incorrect items end up in the wrong bin, they contaminate the recycling / ipu hangarua, which can mean the whole truckload ends up going to landfill. That’s why we need to make sure the only thing that goes in our yellow bins is the stuff that’s too good to waste.

What can be put in the Yellow bin?

YES

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Tins and cans
  • Plastic containers marked with thes esymbols, often embossed on bottom of item

    Plastic symbols 1,2,5
    Plastic symbols 1,2,5

NO

  • Glass
  • Batteries
  • Nappies
  • Drink cartons / Tetrapak
  • Polystyrene, clothes hangers and toys
  • Soft plastics, cling film and strapping

Note: Many of these non recyclable materials can be recycled through other channels – some options are listed here.
