Waste collection: Red (general) & Yellow (paper/plastics/cans)
February 20, 2023
An event every 4 weeks that begins at 12:00 AM on Monday, repeating indefinitely
Your rubbish bin / ipupara
This is your wheelie bin with the red lid, and it’s just for rubbish.
When green waste goes to landfill it creates methane, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.
Instead of putting it in your red bin, consider composting or using our green waste collection.
Did you know? I get collected weekly.
Your recycling bin with the yellow lid / ipu hangarua
This is your wheelie bin with the yellow lid, and it’s just for rubbish.
I get collected on yellow weeks. When incorrect items end up in the wrong bin, they contaminate the recycling / ipu hangarua, which can mean the whole truckload ends up going to landfill. That’s why we need to make sure the only thing that goes in our yellow bins is the stuff that’s too good to waste.
What can be put in the Yellow bin?
YES
- Paper and cardboard
- Tins and cans
- Plastic containers marked with these symbols, often embossed on bottom of item
NO
- Glass
- Batteries
- Nappies
- Drink cartons / Tetrapak
- Polystyrene, clothes hangers and toys
- Soft plastics, cling film and strapping
Note: Many of these non recyclable materials can be recycled through other channels – some options are listed here.
