There are a variety of interesting ways to travel to Ōkiwinui Eastbourne
There’s only one road and currently there may be 2 or 3 stop-go sections owing to the construction of our resilience / shared path Tupa-Horo-Nuku. This is a combined sea wall and pathway from Point Howard to Eastbourne (short break through Day’s Bay) which will make the road more resilient, and allow safe cycling and walking all the way around the bays. The 3 year project is expected to be complete early in 2026.
Driving – as noted, there are road works and possibly stop-go sections so allow plenty of time, but it’s worth it. Days Bay tends to be the main destination, but there are beaches all the way south to Burdan’s Gate, plenty of parking along the way (Day’s Bay can get chokka), and of course Eastbourne Village to visit.
Bus – we have a good bus service, #83 on the weekends from Wellington via Queensgate in Lower Hutt (and the reverse). During the week we also have commuter buses (#81) which run through Petone to the city (bypass Lower Hutt).
Ferry – East by West Ferry runs weekly and weekend service between Queen’s Wharf in the city to Day’s Bay. Matiu / Somes Island is also serviced from Day’s bay.
Bike – You can ride to Eastbourne, but allow for traffic and road works. Some sections of the shared path are complete, the rest will be early 2026. You can get the ferry across to Day’s Bay then ride, or you can drive to Day’s Bay, Eastbourne or Burdan;s Gate and then ride – all the way to Pencarrow and then on to Baring Head if you wish.
Walk – as with cycling, the shared path is not complete until early 2026, so sections around the bays will need to be navigated. The ferry across from the city brings you to Day’s Bay, then it’s a great walk around the coast as far as you want to go.
