Hutt City Council can confirm that it will be free to dispose of potentially asbestoscontaminated play-sand at the Silverstream Landfill for amounts up to 20kg.

opening hours (7.30am-5pm). The service will not be offered on weekends when
asbestos-trained staff are unavailable.
Those dropping off the material must:
• Double bag the sand in plastic rubbish bags and tape shut
• Clearly label the bag with ‘contains asbestos’
• Inform the office at Silverstream Landfill on ssoffice@wm.nz or by phone on 04
563 6952 before arriving at the landfill
Upon arrival at the landfill, please inform the kiosk staff at the weighbridge that you
have an item that may contain asbestos. They will direct you to the appropriate place to
dispose of it.
Council is offering this service after a nationwide recall by retailers of contaminated
products after asbestos was found in a range of coloured play sand.
For amounts of 20kg or more, normal asbestos disposal certificate application process
and charges applied.
Residents can also drop off the contaminated sand at the Waste Management
Technical Services, 57 Port Rd, Seaview. This free service will be operational on
weekdays from 9am-3pm, starting on Thursday 20 November.
Those using this service are asked to:
• Place the sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double tape it securely.
• Deliver the bags to Waste Management Technical Services during opening hours
and report to reception.
• Leave the contents outside the building and inform the attendant that you have
coloured sand potentially containing asbestos.
The attendant will ask you to complete a waste declaration form, which will include
your name, address, contact number, the number of buckets of sand being disposed of
and where it was purchased.
The attendant will then check that the package is securely bagged before directing you
to the designated asbestos drop-off area
