Matariki Puanga 2023

This year, Mana Whenua have gifted ‘Matariki Puanga’ as the name for current and future years. This year’s activities and events will take place between 3 - 20 July. Like last year, we will have a one-day community wide celebration as part of this programme. Through feedback, hui and wānanga between community, stakeholders, and council, we have looked to truly take this celebration into the community. Our approach is to hold this in different parts of the city each year, with this year’s being held on the 9th of July in Naenae.  In addition, as part of the programme, there will be activities at all of our hubs

Eastbourne Community Hub/Library 38 Rimu Street, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, New Zealand

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars, that rises in midwinter and for many Māori, heralds the start of the new year. The return of the cluster is commemorated by Te Rā Aro ki Matariki 2024, which happens on Friday, June 28, this year. Early in the morning, just before dawn, is the optimum time to view the Matariki cluster.
