HCC are reviewing the Māori Land Rates Remissions Policy following the 2021 Local Government (Rating of Whenua Māori) Amendment Act. They propose broadening the scope of the policy, which furthers Council’s commitment to supporting whānau and regional development through whenua (land). This includes considering applications for remission of rates on general land collectively owned by Māori in the circumstances set out in the policy. This aligns with Greater Wellington Regional Council’s policy, a decision we made following consultation with Mana Whenua and kaitiaki of Māori freehold land and to ensure regional consistency. Southern Remutaka: Proposed Aerial 1080 Programme – Operation Notification EcoFX has been contracted by OSPRI New Zealand to undertake a large-scale aerial 1080 operation in the Southern Remutaka Ranges. The purpose of the operation is to reduce the possum population to low numbers to prevent the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB). The operation is scheduled to be delivered in May 2022, but may occur as late as June as the programme is weather-dependent. There are two phases to the proposed programme. Non-toxic prefeed cereal baits will be sown over the treatment blocks at an average ![]() As part of the consent conditions under the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays shared path project(External link), Hutt City Council is required to undertake a speed and safety review on Marine Drive. Further to this the Government’s road safety strategy, 'Road to Zero – Te Ara Ki Ti Ora’(External link), which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads to Zero, also requires all councils to conduct a speed review programme.
