Risk assessment and response – Norfolk Island Pine trees on Muritai Road

See something wrong in the community? Please report it. An Eastbourne resident recently reported a near-miss when a sizeable branch fell of a Norfolk Island Pine near St. Ronan’s Church on Muritai Road. narrowly missing the resident and her child. Fortunately no one was hurt, and fortunately the resident reported this incident following some research into these trees which highlighted potential safety issues. The Eastbourne Community Board reported this to the Hutt City Council, and the HCC commissioned a report into the trees which is linked below.

The response from the council is also below.

The response from Paul Hewitt, Head of Transport and Jon Kingsbury, Director Economy & Development follows:

  • Please find attached report relating to concerns raised about the Norfolk Island Pine trees planted in Muritai Road.
  • It is our intention to undertake the trimming works as shown for the tree outside the St Ronan’s Church shortly and other recommendations and inspections will be programmed.
  • We trust that the above report provides the Eastbourne Community with some assurance and eases concerns relating to these trees.

The assessment was requested following recent branch failures and a reported near miss outside St Ronan’s Church Hall. The purpose of the assessment was to:
• assess the condition of the trees;
• identify any work needed to manage foreseeable risks;
• consider whether the recent branch failures indicate a wider concern; and
• recommend an appropriate future checking and management programme.
