Grab your friends and whānau and join us at Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui for a morning of planting in this rugged corner of the Wellington Region. We will be planting ngaio, tī kouka, harekeke and other native species in the valley alongside the Wainuiomata River. In a few years’ time it’s going to look very different so if you’d like to be part of the team restoring this location, we’d love your help. The Butterfly Creek Picnic Area faces an issue with its historic beech trees. Due to foot traffic over many years, root damage has occurred resulting in a number of trees dying.Join East Harbour Ranger Jo Greenman ahead of the ECB meeting at 5:30 pm on October 31 for an informal chat to find out more and share your thoughts on how best to preserve the remaining trees and ensure Butterfly Creek remains a safe and ecologically vibrant destination for future generations. Join us for a day of planting mingimingi, ake ake, and other native species at these nationally significant lakes. The Parangarahu Lakes are important to the surrounding environment and are home to native taonga. This includes a range of wetland plants, īnanga (galaxias maculatus), manu (birds), and our native freshwater mussel, the kākahi. This planting day is perfect for those who enjoy a bit of physical activity, as you’ll be carrying plants and digging holes.  What to bring/wear:• Sturdy boots or gumboots• Long sleeves and pants, and a waterproof jacket are essential. Greater Wellington Regional Council contracted, professional deer cullers will be hunting in East Harbour Regional Park, Northern Forest between 5th May & 13th June. Hunters will be only hunting when weather conditions are conducive to hunting. There will be 16 days of actual hunting in the period. No hunting will be undertaken on weekends, public holidays or school holidays. Hunting will on occasion be occurring at night. The EHRP website will be updated daily as the hunter communicates his plans to Jo or Zane at GWRC. It's as much work (or as little) as you want to make it, and our primary responsibility is to represent the community to council. We pass on information to the community, get feedback, and relay that back to HCC as appropriate. We need 5 candidates to complete the board, 6 or more to have an election.
