The weather is gate crashing our celebration! The weather isn’t looking too flash for Saturday – so the decision is to postpone the public informal part of the day until Sunday 19 April (next day). Same places, same time (10am-2pm), same fun – just hopefully better weather. The official proceedings (blessing and opening) will still go ahead from 6am at Whiorau Reserve on Saturday 18th April. Years ago Murray Gibbons, Eastbourne Community Board member, rescued the historic Eastbourne jail and with the support of locals and HCC staff developed the idea of restoring and installing it at the base of Rona Wharf as part of the popular Heritage Trail. In general ECB recently requested that HCC place a sign stating “No fires on any beach south of here without a permit.” (or similar) at the entrance to the bays. The sign may not happen, but council did reply (summary): Council’s default position is not to authorise fires in Reserves or Open Space.
